GAS MEMBRANES

Ground gases can such as Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Radon and VOCs can all be found and released during construction of housing and commercial buildings for human occupation, it is therefore essential that Gas Membrane is used to protect people from gas migration and the health issues that can arise through inhalation of these gases.

Our Staff have over 30 years’ experience working with membranes, follow CIRIA guidelines and are CL:AIRE Verified ensuring the highest quality of gas membrane verification.

DIELECTRIC POROSITY TESTING (MIT TESTING)

Through our use of state-of-the-art Dielectric Porosity Testing through the use of Sensor DDS® MIT we are able to detect holes as small as 1mm² this equipment will create an audio visual alarm to warn the technician of the damage to the gas membrane. It is employed directly after the installation of a liner. The system electronically verifies the integrity of the entire surface including the welds. This enables us to find all defects (e.g. caused by transit or following trades) down to pinhole sized damaged.

Sensor® UK also use the following tests to ensure that 100% of punctures are found:

  • Sensor DDS® MIT Testing (Dielectric Porosity Testing) (ASTM D7953 Approved)
  • Air Lance Test (ASTM D4437 Approved)
  • Pick Test
  • Visual inspection (Including photo evidence)

GUIDELINES

In 2015 the British Standard for Good Practice on Gas Membrane Testing and Verification of Protection Systems for Buildings against Hazardous Ground Gases was updated, BS8485:2015+a1:2019 supersedes all previous guidance.

BS8485:2015+a1:2019 operating alongside the CIRIA 735 code of practice states Independent Gas Membrane Testing and Verification Programs are as important as the design and installation process.

Sensor® UK use these guidelines to ensure that all Gas Membranes meet the required standards. We will highlight and inform any errors and ensure that errors are fixed before a plot can be verified.

Sensor® UK use the following to ensure the highest quality service and safety standards:

  • BS 8485 2015
  • CIRIA 735 (2014)
  • CL:AIRE (Contaminated Land: Applications in Real Environments)
  • CSWIP (Certification Scheme for Welding Inspection Personnel)
  • BGA (British Geomembrane Association)
